Crowns Q & A

What are crowns?

A crown is a synthetic covering bonded to the top of a damaged or decaying tooth. If you experience a blow to the mouth or develop a deep cavity, crowns can reduce the risk of other complications and prevent the need for an extraction.

Traditionally, crowns were made from metal amalgam, a silver material. Thanks to advances in manufacturing, VaraniSmile is able to offer porcelain, tooth-colored crowns. Porcelain crowns blend in with your existing teeth, ensuring your smile appears vibrant and natural.

Why would I need a crown?

VaraniSmile uses crowns to:

  • Protect weak or severely damaged teeth
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Restore broken and worn down teeth
  • Make cosmetic modifications
  • Restore dental implants

You might also benefit from a crown if you need a root canal. A root canal is an endodontic procedure that removes the pulp from the center of a tooth. That eliminates the risk of infection and preserves your smile.

What does getting crowns involve?

At VaraniSmile, getting porcelain crowns takes two visits.

First crowns visit

To see if you need a crown, your VaraniSmile provider takes oral X-rays and conducts a comprehensive exam.

If they determine you have a decaying or damaged tooth, your provider administers a local anesthetic and removes the affected portion of your tooth enamel.

Next, they use an intraoral scanner to take digital impressions of your tooth. Your provider covers your tooth with a temporary crown and sends your impressions to a dental facility.

The dental facility uses your impressions to create a custom crown that fits your tooth perfectly. When it's ready, you return to VaraniSmile.

Second crowns visit

On your second visit, your VaraniSmile provider removes your temporary crown and replaces it with the permanent one. Before you leave, they polish your teeth and explain how to keep your crown in optimal condition.

How long do crowns last?

Most crowns last 12-15* years, but you can extend their use by investing in preventive dentistry. VaraniSmile recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth two times a day
  • Flossing regularly
  • Not biting down on hard objects like pen caps or ice cubes
  • Protecting your crown with a mouthguard or a nightguard

It’s also important to visit VaraniSmile two times a year. Oral exams and routine cleanings can keep your teeth and smile healthy for years to come.
