Root Canals Q & A

What are root canals?

A root canal is a type of oral surgery that removes the pulp from the center of a damaged or decaying tooth. Pulp is a soft connective tissue that contains nerves and blood vessels. It nourishes your teeth and allows you to feel temperature sensations but isn’t necessary for a tooth’s long-term health.

By removing the pulp from the center of your tooth and filling it with a material called gutta-percha, it’s possible to eliminate discomfort and restore your tooth to its healthy, near-original condition.

Who needs a root canal?

VaraniSmile uses root canals to address:

  • Deep decay
  • Severely damaged teeth
  • Extensive dental work
  • Oral trauma, such as a blow to the mouth

Make an appointment at VaraniSmile if you experience swelling, increased tooth sensitivity, or a sensation of heat in your gums.

What do root canals involve?

At VaraniSmile, root canal therapy takes two separate visits.

First root canal visit

Before conducting a root canal, your VaraniSmile provider performs an oral exam and takes a series of X-rays to assess the condition of your tooth. Next, they administer a local anesthetic to numb your mouth and gently remove the pulp from the center of your tooth.

After removing the pulp, your provider cleans your root canal and fills it with gutta-percha. Your provider uses an intraoral scanner to take digital impressions of your tooth and then bonds a temporary crown on top.

A professional dental facility uses your impressions to manufacture a custom dental crown that fits your tooth perfectly.

Second root canal visit

When VaraniSmile receives your permanent crown, you return to the office. Your provider removes your temporary crown and bonds the permanent one in its place.

What is recovery like after a root canal?

After a root canal, you might experience some mild swelling and increased tooth sensitivity. To minimize any discomfort, VaraniSmile recommends:

  • Using a desensitizing toothpaste
  • Brushing gently
  • Biting and chewing gently
  • Avoiding extremely hot or extremely cold foods
  • Eating only soft foods a day or two

You may also want to take over-the-counter pain medication or apply an ice pack to your cheek.
