Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth. There are three main dentures options:

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace some of your teeth and use your natural teeth for support. This type of denture usually has metal clasps that secure its position. Or, you can opt for precision partial dentures, which feature hidden attachments that connect to attachments on the back of your natural teeth or dental crowns.

Full dentures

Full dentures replace all the teeth in the maxillary (upper) or mandibular (lower) arch. Upper dentures suction to the roof of your mouth, while lower dentures suction to your horseshoe-shaped lower arch.

Dental-implant supported dentures

With this option, dental implants hold your replacement teeth permanently in position. Usually, you have four dental implants per arch for full dentures. For partial dentures, you may need just one or two dental implants, depending on how many teeth are in your denture.

Why should I replace missing teeth?

Whether you choose dentures, dental implants, or a hybrid option like implant dentures, it's vitally important to replace missing teeth.

When you're missing teeth, you lose your ability to eat normally, and it becomes harder to speak. Many people also find missing teeth quite embarrassing. All of these things can really detract from your quality of life.

Dentures can improve your chewing and speaking while also restoring your facial symmetry. Today's high-tech dentures are also remarkably comfortable, easy to wear, and affordable.

What is the dentures process?

You start with a dental checkup, an appointment that determines what kind of mouth preparation you need. Teeth cleaning is part of this appointment if you have any natural teeth. After this appointment, you may need to return for tooth extractions or other preparation.

Once your mouth heals following extractions or other preparation, impressions map your mouth precisely. The dental lab creates custom dentures based upon your impressions, and VaraniSmile performs any necessary adjustments to perfect the fit.

How long do dentures last?

On average, dentures last 10-15 years with proper upkeep. Good denture maintenance, including daily cleaning, good routine dental care, and adjustments as needed, can maximize denture lifespan.

Proper denture care and fit are also crucial for your oral and general health. Not only are poorly fitted dentures uncomfortable, but they can put you at risk for major health problems. For instance, if you have ill-fitting dentures, your risk of head and neck cancer quadruples.
